Jesus Action Figures?
2007 July 18
It’s no joke. Tales of Glory action figures are for sale in Wal-marts and sponsored by Dobson ministries Focus on the Family. See Doug Wolter’s post and contribute to the discussion.
Too much focus on the family for me!

Consumerism at its worst again. I’ll pick up one of these right after I purchase a “Jesus is my homeboy!” T-shirt.
This is the next step forward in child evangelism. Can’t you just picture neighborhood kids lining up the next fight…Optimus Prime vs. Tales of Glory Jesus. Of course Jesus will win! And then next week it’s Darth Vader vs. Buddy Jesus. That’s a toughie!
Luther said “For where God built a church, there the Devil would also build a chapel.” I think this fits here.
Just because something has the ‘Christian’ tag on it doesn’t make it better or even worthwhile. I think Zeke would be better off playing with the 25th anniversary GI Joe set that I just bought him than. Jesus should be prayed to, worshiped, obeyed, not played with. (Although in person…I bet Jesus would be the best babysitter in the world…uh…universe!)
Sorry it’s hard to be even remotely serious about this stuff.
If you want to waste any more time on this here’s a guy who’s wife is a children’s minister who got one of these at conference. Fair, balanced, funny.

In case you didn’t know…it’s made in China.
A friend of mine told me about a friend of his who quit his job at Lifeway the day he saw his store stocking Jesus action figures.
I’m not sure if you can take Jesus seriously when you make an action figure out of Him. Fantasy characters are usually relegated to the realm of toys and figures because we want to shape our fantasies and create our playworlds…Jesus does not belong there–He’s just so much bigger than that.
