Bella Fleck Interview

August 17, 2007

As the Austin City Limits music event approaches, austin360 is interviewing some of the artists that will be here. Bella Fleck (who is incredible in concert) offers his humorous responses:

Bela Fleck: Our music is a combination of many things. It has some parts that are jazz, but there are also elements from bluegrass and roots music, not to mention classical and world music influences. It is hard to describe!

How do you plan to cope with Austin summer heat, will it cramp your onstage style?

Nah, we are tough. I hope the drumitar doesn’t melt though!

What other bands are you looking forward to seeing at the festival?

Björk is a big one for me.

What’s the last CD you paid full price for?

Saxophonist Micheal Brecker’s latest and final CD. He died just afterwards from cancer.

I’ve seen Bela Fleck and the Flecktones live twice. The first time was several years ago at Fry Street Fair in Denton. Evan Jacobs and I were there together, and we left early because the show seemed lame to us. We were especially disappointed by the drumitar, which didn’t seem to function much different than the rhythm buttons on a Casio keyboard.
The second time was a couple of months ago here in Monterrey. I had not been to any concerts since I arrived in Monterrey three years ago, but some of the musicians at my church invited me to the Bela Fleck show. It was the first time they had come to Monterrey, but the Teatro de la Ciudad downtown was sold out. It turned out to be a great show, and the crowd was super into it. I especially enjoyed Bela’s 10-minute solo improvisation at the end, which wove together elements of pop, classical, and bluegrass music.

I saw them in CT a few years ago and it was just amazing. Glad to hear your first experience was redeemed by a second!
