Sci-Fi Recommendations

April 18, 2009

I love Sci-Fi, especially philosophical Sci-Fi like the Blade Runner, Matrix, Equilibrium, THX 1138. Here are two newer films I’d recommend:

Primer – Sundance winner I saw a few years ago that is the opposite of Chrysalis. This film is disjointed, confusing, with no special effects or action but an amazing storyline. This one will get you thinking for some time.

Chrysalis – this French, Sci-Fi film noir has remarkable sound, lighting, cinematography and a decent plot. The fight sequences are reminiscent of the Bourne Identity films, and the themes probe beyond the depth of our need for relationships into idolatry of relationships.

Feel free to share some of your Sci-Fi recommendations!

    • K-PAX
    • 12 Monkeys
    • LOST – though it’s not a movie/film, it’s extremely well-written and produced and full of rich spiritual illustrations
    • Minority Report – not quite as thought-provoking/philosophical as the others, but certainly entertaining to watch

Campy-FLASH GORDON. It had the greatest one liner “Flash, I love you but we only have 24 hours to save the Earth!”

Thought provoking-2001 Space Odyssey. Better every time I watch it.

Just plain fun-The Arrival with Charlie Sheen.

You should have never given somebody like me a venue to suggest scifi movies Johnathan, but thanks, because this is a favorite genre of mine as well.

Here are a few of my faves, involving apocalyptic (mostly) themes.

Sunshine – World will end because the sun is dying.
Children of Men – World will end because all women on earth stop having babies.
Planet of the Apes (Original) – World will end because monkeys took over.
Predator – World will end if Arnold doesn’t kill a deadly alien.
Wall-E – World already ended, but there’s a cute robot left on it.
Sean of the Dead – World will end because of zombies, but there’s still time for romance
Fifth Element – World will end unless Bruce Willis saves it, I think you know how this one ends.
12 Monkeys – World will end unless Bruce Willis goes back in time to save it, I don’t think you know how this one ends.
Dark City – World will end unless the aliens using us as puppets are overthrown, this is basically the matrix without all the kung fu.
Equilibrium – World will end if people don’t start feeling their emotions, this is basically 1984, with all the kung fu.
28 Days Later – World will end because of a supervirus, but this isn’t a zombie movie, even if everybody thinks it is.
Night of the Living Dead – World will end…this is obviously a zombie movie.
Alien – World isn’t in any danger, but the crew of a spaceship is, because they’re trapped with an alien!
Aliens – World still isn’t in danger, but this one has awesome space marines!
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – World is in absolutely no danger, but the movie is as clever and well thought out as the title.
Cowboy Bebop (movie) – World will end because in anime, that’s how the world rolls. Seriously though, if you don’t like anime, watch this movie.
Ghost in the Shell (movie) – World will end unless the mostly cybernetic police track down a dangerous computer virus, which is dangerous, because people are more machine now than man.
Akira – World will end if angst ridden teenage boy uses his awesome psychic powers to destroy it.
Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz – World aint gonna end, because these kids have awesome giant robots!

Alright, I’m going to stop, because I could probably do this all day. If anybody wants to get together and have a sci-fiathon, let me know.

JD, did you know we went to college with the guy who made Primer (Shane Caruth)? He was Todd Berry’s roommate. The story about how he made this film is incredible (teaser: price tag = a mere 7k)

    Just a few:

    Gattaca ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119177/)
    Dark City (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118929/)
Cherry 2000 (http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=cherry+2000) (this is kind of a campy cult classic)
