Last week during our Vacation Bible School I led a 5-night project called Renew. Each evening we had a short reflection on our call to serve our neighbors and renew our community, then we went out and overhauled 11 weed-infested, trash-dumped tree wells around the neighborhood. In a way it was a great moving parable of the gospel–taking something that was messed up and abandoned, adopting it, and making it beautiful. One of the best parts was the conversations we had with neighbors and passers-by. Seeds were planted, literally and figuratively.

The family next door – 3 kids, 2 parents – all came down with swine flu at the same time. They got through it ok but were housebound for a couple weeks. When I did my grocery shopping, I filled a couple bags for them and took it over. My husband also did some yardwork for them. I was surprised when they were all better and wrote a thank you card, that they said it was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for them.
