How to Smoke a Pipe

October 15, 2009

For those that smoke a pipe, this is a helpful introduction, not that I am advocating pipe-smoking. I’m just saying, the guy explained it well.

Bleah. Always seems to smell good but smoking one tastes no different than smoking a cigar, and you get that “been licking ashtrays” taste the next day.

Hmmmm. Licked ashtray taste. How awful.

The slightest hint of licked ashtray taste never has anything to do with my pipe experience. It sounds like results from a dirty (really dirty) pipe, smoking a grossly overheated pipe or from smoking cheap burley cigarette tobacco – or all three. I know scores of pipe smokers who, properly guided, never reported a nasty experience. Nary a one.

Proper guidance for enjoyable pipe smoking is key. Bad tobacco selection and/or a pipe that is improperly cleaned could probably make for a bad experience. To enjoy a pipe from a cold start requires a little direction an experienced mentor. That or a lot of time to make a lot of mistakes and, maybe, finally figure it out.
